The Tumut Aero club was formed in 1956 by a local group of ex-R.A.A.F servicemen from WW2. They constructed an aerodrome on Mr Jack Butler's farm and "Butlers Field was offically opened on the 4th of May 1957 by Air Vice Marshall Francis M. Bladen.  Butler's airfield was located approximatley three Kilometers closer to Tumut than the current airport. In the late 1960's the club relocated to the current airport upon it's completion. The club has been training pilots for over fifty-five years in various forms of aviation including General Aviation, Gliding and more recent years 'Recreational Aviation'.
